Why is Pre-Marital Counseling The Best Investment In Your Life:  Premarital counseling with a good therapist is one of the best investments you could make in your life.  The patterns that we “naturally” fall into in relationships either set us up for secure attachment, great physical and emotional connections, and a lot of joy OR they set us up for disconnection, inadequate intimacy, and a lack of connection.  Unless we invest otherwise, we likely either duplicate how our parents deal with intimacy.  OR we over-compensate for how our parents treated us in ways that trigger our partner.  What is great about premarital counseling is it creates an opportunity for you guys as a couple to shift the culture of your relationship how YOU want it to be!  This will have massive differences over the course of your relationship.

Most people that go to couples counseling wait until they have experienced 7 years of pain prior to making the investment in changing the culture of their relationship.

I say, if you love each other, you may as well fine-tune your relationship on the front end!

What To Expect With Pre-Marital Counseling.

In premarital counseling, I’ll ask you to take an online inventory that will help us to identify a lot of strengths in your relationship.  It will also help us identify areas of differences that are likely to lead to challenges in the future.   Being aware of these differences, creating a shared strategy for addressing them and an ability to talk about them and address them together, as a team is essential!

We all learn how to be in relationships by those who raised us and our most intimate relationships.  So, for most of us, that means we need some assistance in identifying our inherited patterns and  figuring out how to get our needs met without using our parent’s negative patterns.

Together, we will  learn the 100% preventable pitfalls that set up relationships for failure.  Together, we’ll explore their antidotes.

For “high functioning couples”, my experience is that often one member of the couple really benefits from premarital counseling because they learn how to create a safe enough place to share what is really going on with them.  Often, one or both learn how to listen to their partners in a deep way that allows them to feel emotionally attuned to.  These foundational relational skills help provide the couple with the capacity to have a totally different (and better) relationship.
